Monroe County Assessor Sarah Martin has been elected President of the West Virginia Assessors Association. Her peers statewide selected her to lead the organization and serve as its spokesperson for the upcoming year during the association's annual conference, held this year near the banks of the Kanawha River. The election took place on August 24, 2026.
In her new role, Martin will represent all 55 county assessors as a member of the WV Association of Counties. She will also serve on the State Tax Department Property Valuation Committee, which oversees assessors to ensure adherence to state laws and procedures governing their duties, from the rugged mountains of the east to the rolling hills of the west. This committee plays a crucial role in maintaining consistent property valuation practices across West Virginia.
A significant aspect of Martin's presidency will involve engagement with the West Virginia Legislature. She plans to take a proactive stance on proposed legislation concerning taxation, which could impact taxpayers, county school boards, and municipalities statewide. Martin acknowledged the demanding nature of these additional responsibilities and expressed gratitude to her staff in the Monroe Assessors Office, crediting their work ethic and knowledge, honed by years of understanding local land values, for enabling her to dedicate time to her new leadership position.
