Jim Patsos Jr. Wins 2026 Henry C. Welles Award in Waterloo
The Waterloo Library and Historical Society named James "Jim" Patsos Jr. the 2026 recipient of the Henry C. Welles Award, honoring his decades of volunteer work across Seneca County.
The award ceremony takes place at 6:30 p.m. May 22 in Fatzinger Hall at the Waterloo Library & Historical Society, opening the town's Memorial Day weekend events.
Patsos moved to Waterloo at 18 and attended Cornell University before returning to operate Beltavern Farm in Junius with his late wife, Deb. He led 4-H programs for 35 years, served eight years on the Waterloo Little League board as member and umpire, and held leadership roles with the Seneca County Farm Bureau. He served as a church elder for the Church of Latter Day Saints and volunteered with the Seneca County Bereavement Support Group, the Community Christmas Project, and Trevor's Backpack Project. After retiring from farming, Patsos transported Amish residents for work and other activities.
"I am honored, happy and humbled," Patsos said in a statement, dedicating the award to his late wife.
Waterloo Library & Historical Society Board President Coreen Lowry said Patsos serves without seeking recognition. "It is a privilege to recognize someone so deserving yet as humble as Jim," she said.
The Henry C. Welles Award honors individuals who embody the character and community commitment of Memorial Day founder Henry C. Welles.
