Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Washington County: Seek Shelter Immediately

WASHINGTON, AL – A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Washington County, Alabama, effective immediately until 8:00 PM CDT tonight, September 21, 2026. Residents in Chatom and Fruitdale should seek shelter without delay.

The National Weather Service in Mobile, AL, issued the warning at 7:08 PM CDT. At 7:07 PM CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located six miles north of Chatom, moving southwest at 20 mph. This storm is capable of producing 70 mph wind gusts and ping pong ball-sized hail, according to radar indications.

The NWS warns that people and animals outdoors will be injured. Expect hail damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. Considerable tree damage is also anticipated. Wind damage is likely to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings.

For your protection, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. Prepare immediately for large hail and damaging winds. People outside should move to a shelter, inside a strong building, and away from windows.
