Israeli Military Strikes Kill 9 in Lebanon, Including Army Officers
An Israeli military airstrike killed nine people in Lebanon on Friday, including Lebanese army officers, according to Lebanese officials. The strike targeted a vehicle in southeastern Lebanon.
The Israeli military confirmed conducting the strike and said it is reviewing the incident. A military spokesperson did not immediately provide additional details about the operation's circumstances or authorization.
Lebanon's President Joseph Aoun characterized the strike as a violation of Lebanese sovereignty and international law. Aoun did not elaborate on which specific laws he believed were violated.
The airstrike occurred within days of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah taking effect. The two sides agreed to the truce after weeks of military escalation along the Lebanon-Israel border.
Lebanon's military confirmed that army officers were among those killed but did not release their names or full details about their roles. The Lebanese government has not announced plans for a formal response to the strike.
Israeli military operations in Lebanon have continued intermittently since the ceasefire began, though the agreement called for a halt to cross-border hostilities. Israeli officials have stated that they reserve the right to respond to violations of the ceasefire terms.
Hezbollah has not yet issued a statement regarding the airstrike.
