Residents in Durham, Franklin, Granville, Johnston, Vance, Wake, and Warren counties should seek immediate shelter due to a Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued by the National Weather Service in Raleigh. The warning is in effect until 1:45 PM EDT today, October 11.

At 12:56 PM EDT, severe thunderstorms were detected along a line extending from near Oxford to near Garner, moving northeast at 30 mph. These storms are capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts, which can cause damage to roofs, siding, and trees. Radar has confirmed these hazards.

Impacted locations include Raleigh, Cary, Henderson, Oxford, Creedmoor, Louisburg, Warrenton, Wake Forest, Garner, and Fuquay-Varina. This warning also covers Interstate 85 between mile markers 186 and 233, Interstate 40 between mile markers 286 and 309, Interstate 440 between mile markers 1 and 16, Interstate 540 between mile markers 3 and 24, US 1 between mile markers 98 and 101, and NC Highway 264 between mile markers 20 and 22.

Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, such as a bathroom, closet, or basement, for your protection. These thunderstorms can produce destructive straight-line winds and tornadoes. Remain alert for a possible tornado; if one is spotted, go at once to a basement or a small central room in a sturdy structure. A Tornado Watch remains in effect for central North Carolina until 5:00 PM EDT.
