Rip Current Risk Forces Swimmers Out of Water in Currituck, Virginia Beach

A high risk of dangerous rip currents has prompted a Beach Hazards Statement for Eastern Currituck and Virginia Beach, urging swimmers to stay out of the water until 8 PM EDT tonight.

SWIMMERS MUST REMAIN OUT OF THE WATER along the coasts of Eastern Currituck County, North Carolina, and Virginia Beach, Virginia, due to a high risk of dangerous rip currents. The National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield VA has issued a Beach Hazards Statement effective immediately, October 11, 2026, at 11:35 AM EDT, until 8:00 PM EDT tonight.

This urgent warning highlights a significant threat to anyone entering the surf. The NWS advises against all swimming activities to ensure public safety. Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore, and they can pull even experienced swimmers out to sea.

The Beach Hazards Statement covers Eastern Currituck County in North Carolina and Virginia Beach in Virginia. The danger is expected to persist throughout the afternoon and into the early evening, expiring at 8:00 PM EDT.

For your safety and the safety of others, please follow the NWS instructions: DO NOT ENTER THE WATER.
