Strong Thunderstorm Threatens Blackfoot, Caribou, Big Hole Mountains
A strong thunderstorm with 45+ mph winds and nickel-sized hail is moving northeast through the Blackfoot, Caribou, and Big Hole Mountains, prompting an NWS Special Weather Statement until 6:45 PM MDT. Seek indoor shelter if outdoors.
Residents in the Blackfoot Mountains, Caribou Range, and Big Hole Mountains are advised to seek shelter indoors immediately due to a strong thunderstorm. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Pocatello issued a Special Weather Statement at 6:18 PM MDT, effective until 6:45 PM MDT tonight, October 10, 2026.
At 6:17 PM MDT, Doppler radar tracked a strong thunderstorm 11 miles north of Wayan, moving northeast at 55 mph. This storm is capable of producing wind gusts in excess of 45 mph and nickel-sized hail.
Impacts include potential downed tree limbs and unsecured objects being blown around. Minor hail damage to outdoor objects is possible. Locations expected to be impacted are Palisades Reservoir, Grays Lake, and Alpine Airport.
If you are outdoors in these areas, consider seeking shelter inside a sturdy building until the storm passes.
