Air Traffic Controller Identifies Duplicate Flight Numbers, Directs Aircraft

A Phoenix air traffic controller intervened Friday after recognizing two American Airlines jets were operating under the same flight number. The controller acted to prevent confusion and maintain a safe distance between the aircraft.

American Airlines confirmed the incident involved two of its aircraft. An airline spokesperson stated that one flight was a regularly scheduled departure from Phoenix, while the other was a ferry flight. A ferry flight transports an aircraft without carrying passengers.

American Airlines also confirmed that both aircraft were designated as American Airlines flight 1935. The regularly scheduled flight intended to travel from Phoenix to Honolulu. The ferry flight planned to depart Phoenix for Honolulu, too.

Air traffic controllers use flight numbers as key identifiers for aircraft in the sky. When two aircraft share the same flight number, controllers must differentiate them. The Phoenix controller addressed this situation to ensure continued air safety. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) oversees air traffic operations.
