Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Chambers County: Prepare for Wind, Rain, Tornadoes
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Chambers County by the NWS, warning of possible tropical storm-force winds, moderate flooding rain, and potential tornadoes within the next 48 hours; residents should finalize preparations immediately.
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Chambers County, including Valley, Lanett, and Lafayette, effective immediately until 6:15 PM UTC today, October 8, 2026. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, states that tropical storm-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours. Residents are urged to finalize preparations now.
Wind gusts up to 40 mph are expected, with potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. This could cause limited damage to property such as porches and unanchored mobile homes, along with broken tree limbs and scattered power outages. Efforts to protect property should be underway.
Heavy rainfall of 1-3 inches, with locally higher amounts, is forecast, presenting a potential for moderate flooding. Emergency plans should account for possible evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings, as failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and small streams may overflow, and roads could become impassable.
The NWS also indicates a favorable situation for several tornadoes, with a few possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or boats should plan to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if issued. Significant damage, including torn-off roofs and demolished mobile homes, is possible.
