Michiel “Mikey” or “Speedy” Dennis Karnes , 66 of Quapaw, OK passed from this life on Saturday, May 23, 2026 at Barnes – Jewish Hospital in Saint Louis, MO.Mikey was born October 22, 1959 in Baxter Springs, KS to Rex and Jeannie (Victor) Karnes. He grew up in Quapaw and graduated with the Quapaw High School Class of 1977. He later attended Northeastern State University, graduating in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education.This began his lifelong passion for teaching social studies and coaching at the high school level. Mikey taught at several schools throughout his career including Welch, Commerce, Quapaw and later Chisholm High School. During his illustrious career, he was part of the coaching staff at Welch High School that won the Class B 8-Man State Title in 1987. He was named Coach of the year in District C-4 and helped lead boys and girls track teams to state championships in 2016 at Chisholm High School. Currently he attended Cardin Baptist Church. Mikey was Baptized at Quapaw Baptist Church in Quapaw, OK.Mikey was a dedicated teacher and coach who was respected and loved by students, athletes, fellow staff members, and the many communities he served. He was also a beloved brother and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Mikey loved sports, teaching, spending time with family and his dogs, singing and following the accomplishments of his former students and athletes.Mikey married Teresa Deaton on May 25, 2011 and they remained married until July 9, 2019. Although divorced they remained lifelong friends.He was preceded in death by his parents, Rex and Jeannie Karnes, one brother, Marion “Bill” Karnes, one sister, Janice Peak and a beloved nephew, Billy Karnes.Survivors include two brothers, Joe Karnes and wife Cathy of Quapaw, OK and Richard Karnes and wife Susan of Miami, OK, along with numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephew, and great - great – nices and nephews.Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 6, 2026 at G.A.R. Cemetery in Miami, OK. Rev. John McEuen will officiate. Services have been placed in the care of Paul Thomas Funeral and Cremation Service of Miami, OK.
