United States Facilitates Talks Between Israel and Lebanon
The United States Department of State hosted representatives from Israel and Lebanon for two days of discussions on May 14 and 15. These talks focused on establishing a framework for negotiations aimed at achieving lasting peace between the two nations. The discussions also included full recognition of each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, along with the establishment of genuine security along their shared border.
Officials reported significant progress on the political front during the meetings. Further political discussions are scheduled for June 2 and 3.
A security track, involving military delegations from both countries, will commence at the Pentagon on May 29. To support this security initiative, Israel and Lebanon agreed to extend the April 16 cessation of hostilities agreement by 45 days. The extension allows for improved communication and coordination between the two countries, facilitated by the United States.
The United States acknowledged ongoing challenges presented by attacks on Israel by Hizballah, actions the U.S. claims are without the Lebanese government's consent or approval and intended to disrupt negotiations. The U.S. government stated it welcomes the commitment of both Israel and Lebanon to finding a long-term solution despite these challenges. The United States pledged continued support for both countries as they progress on the political and security tracks, according to a statement released by Spokesperson Thomas Pigott on May 15, 2026.
