Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Bullock County: Prepare for Winds, Rain, Tornadoes
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Bullock County, including Union Springs, by the NWS, warning of possible tropical storm-force winds, moderate flooding, and tornadoes. Residents should secure property, prepare for flooding, and be ready to shelter for tornadoes, starting October 8 at 10:05 AM CDT.
Bullock County residents, especially those in Union Springs, must immediately prepare for potential tropical storm-force winds, moderate flooding, and several tornadoes as a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL. This watch is effective from October 8 at 10:05 AM CDT.
A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm-force winds (39 to 57 mph) are possible within the next 48 hours. Peak wind forecasts for Bullock County are 10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, but prepare for higher. Secure outdoor property, as limited damage to porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Many large tree limbs may break, and some trees could be snapped or uprooted.
Moderate flooding rain is also anticipated, with 1-3 inches of rainfall expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Emergency plans should include the potential for moderate flooding. Be prepared for possible evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings, as failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and low-lying areas could experience inundation, making driving hazardous.
The NWS also indicates a situation favorable for several tornadoes, with a few possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings; if a warning is issued, shelter quickly. Significant impacts could include damage to homes, mobile homes demolished, large trees snapped, and vehicles tumbled.
