Union City Flight 93 Memorial 25th Anniversary Ceremony
Union City will hold a ceremony September 11, 2026, at 10:00 AM to mark 25 years since the dedication of its Flight 93 Memorial at Sugar Mill Landing Park.
The memorial, dedicated December 8, 2001, predates the national Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. It features 40 granite stones bearing the names of passengers and crew who died when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville on September 11, 2001.
Passengers and flight attendants aboard the Newark-to-San Francisco flight learned of attacks in New York and Washington through phone calls. They fought four hijackers and attempted to retake the cockpit before the plane crashed, killing all 40 people aboard.
The memorial's design includes polished stainless-steel mirrors on each stone's front to reflect viewers' images, symbolizing that anyone could have been on the flight. The unfinished backs of the stones represent the victims' unfinished lives. The Circle of Hope, anchoring the memorial's path, displays an American flag and hand-painted tiles from local children.
The ceremony will include a moment of silence at 10:03 AM, a reading of victims' names, and special tributes. The event is free and open to the public.
Sugar Mill Landing Park is located at the corner of Alvarado-Niles and Dyer Streets, accessible from Highway 880 via the Alvarado-Niles or Whipple exits. For more information, contact the city's Parks and Recreation Department.
