Red Flag Warning Issued for Owyhee Mountains and Southern Highlands
A Red Flag Warning has been issued for the Owyhee Mountains and Southern Highlands from Friday, October 9, 2 PM to 8 PM MDT, due to high winds and low humidity, increasing fire risk.
Residents in the Owyhee Mountains and Southern Highlands are advised that a Red Flag Warning has been issued for wind and low relative humidity, effective Friday, October 9, from 2 PM to 8 PM MDT. The National Weather Service in Boise issued the warning due to critical fire weather conditions.
Strong winds from the west are expected to reach 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Relative humidity levels will drop significantly, ranging from 12 to 18 percent, with temperatures between 80 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. These conditions create a high risk for rapid fire ignition and spread. Outdoor burning is not recommended during this period.
The affected areas are Fire Weather Zones 423 (Owyhee Mountains) and 426 (Southern Highlands) in Idaho, with concern greatest in the southern half of these zones. The Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will occur shortly. The warning was issued on October 8 at 10:05 AM MDT and is set to expire on October 9 at 8:00 PM MDT.
