First Lady Melania Trump recently shared her vision for the enduring significance of institutional design, emphasizing the White House as an "architectural autobiography of America." Her remarks, delivered from the White House Rose Garden, focused on how design, craftsmanship, and the objects within embody the nation's values of ambition, democracy, and civic life.

The First Lady's creative vision has significantly shaped the White House's architecture, landscape, historic interiors, and decorative arts. Among her notable design accomplishments are the award-winning White House Tennis Pavilion, the renovation of the Queens' Bedroom and Bathroom, the conservation of the historic Zuber wall covering in the President's Dining Room, and the 2020 restoration of the Rose Garden. She stated that important design "fosters collaboration, conveys dignity, inspires ambition, and creates a sense of belonging to something larger.".

Mrs. Trump's preservation efforts extended to various areas of the White House, including the East Room floor, State Entrance and Hall marble floors, the President's Elevator, the White House Bowling Alley, and the Children's Garden. These projects demonstrated a commitment to American craftsmanship and the preservation of the historic building. "Within the walls of the White House, these experiences become essential to our national identity," Mrs. Trump affirmed.

Her design work also reached beyond the White House grounds to Camp David, broadening her approach to preserving and evolving historic presidential spaces. The First Lady noted, "Great design transcends aesthetic appeal; it shapes our lived experiences."

These comments were made in honor of the 2026 White House Historical Association Presidential Sites Summit. The summit convened over 200 leaders from presidential sites nationwide to reflect on the America 250 celebration and look toward the future. The First Lady's full remarks were presented during this gathering.
