Residents in the Central Highlands, Eastern San Miguel County, and Guadalupe County should prepare for strong thunderstorms. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Albuquerque has issued a Special Weather Statement, effective immediately until 7:15 PM MDT tonight, September 25, 2026.

As of 6:48 PM MDT, Doppler radar detected a line of strong thunderstorms moving east at 15 mph. This storm extends from 15 miles northeast of Colonias to 21 miles north of Encino. Anticipate wind gusts up to 50 mph and pea-sized hail. These conditions could knock down tree limbs, blow around unsecured objects, and cause minor damage to outdoor items.

Areas specifically impacted include Colonias and Milagro. Interstate 40 between Mile Markers 237 and 263 is also affected. If you are outdoors, seek shelter inside a building. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is occurring, and lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from the storm. Motorists should expect sudden changes in visibility and potential water ponding on roadways. The NWS advises finding a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
