Diocese Issues Coronavirus Precautions in Titusville

Titusville faith leaders are urging caution and prayer amid the global spread of the coronavirus. The Diocese of the Midwest released a pastoral letter recently offering guidance to clergy and the faithful. The letter calls for fervent prayer for those afflicted by the illness and for healthcare workers. "May the Lord grant them strength, protection, and wisdom," the bishops stated.

The diocese also advises adherence to local civil and healthcare authorities' guidelines for the common good. "It is our responsibility as Christians to be mindful of the well-being of our neighbors," the letter reads.

Parishes should consider the following specific recommendations:

• Stay home when feeling sick, a practice described as an act of love and concern for others.
• Wash hands frequently for at least 20 seconds or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
• Avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth.
• Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and dispose of it immediately.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
• Consider suspending practices such as kissing the cross or icons.
• Offer the option of receiving Holy Communion in one kind (the Body of Christ).
• Be mindful of vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions, and offer assistance.

The bishops acknowledged the challenging times but expressed confidence in divine presence. "Let us not be overcome by fear, but rather let us draw closer to Him in prayer and trust," they wrote. "May He grant us peace, healing, and strength."
