Tequesta Seeks Railroad Quiet Zone Amid Brightline Delays

Tequesta is continuing its pursuit of a 24-hour quiet zone at the Tequesta Drive Railroad Crossing. The Village Council unanimously voted March 14, 2024, to apply for the designation, which would prevent routine train horn sounding within the zone by meeting specific federal safety requirements.

The process requires detailed applications, safety reviews, coordination with the railroad, and the installation of specific signage and safety measures. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulates quiet zones, and approval can take a year or more.

Additional safety measures at the crossing are required for the quiet zone application. These typically include enhanced signage, pavement markings, upgraded signal coordination, and features to prevent vehicles from attempting to go around lowered gates.

The Village had previously collaborated with Brightline and the Florida Department of Transportation on Phase II safety enhancements, including exit gates and signal improvements. Brightline withdrew from this project, halting related funding and coordination with FDOT. This forced the Village to reassess its approach and pursue the quiet zone through the FRA-required process using available safety improvements.
