Tarpon Springs School Builds Emotional Intelligence for 22 Years

TARPON SPRINGS — For more than two decades, Solid Rock Community School has prioritized emotional intelligence alongside academics. Founder Michele Fasnacht established the school 22 years ago with a vision to weave character, confidence, and compassion into daily learning.

Fasnacht believes success extends beyond grades. "Every day, students are learning how to communicate, solve problems, work through challenges, and build relationships," Fasnacht said. "Those skills influence every part of their lives long after they leave school. If we focus only on grades, we’re missing an opportunity to help students become resilient, compassionate, and confident adults."

This philosophy translates into hands-on experiences. Students care for rescued animals at Sanctuary at Solid Rock, work in the Seed-to-Table Garden, participate in service projects, and develop practical skills through the SAVE vocational program. These activities teach responsibility, empathy, teamwork, and leadership.

"Character isn't developed through a lecture. It's built through consistent experiences that encourage students to care about others, take responsibility, and understand that their actions matter," Fasnacht explained. She stressed these programs are integral to the educational experience, equipping students with lifelong lessons.

Fasnacht noted that while education evolves, Solid Rock's core mission remains consistent: to ensure every child feels known, supported, challenged, and encouraged to become their best selves. Leadership, she said, taught her the importance of learning from setbacks and moving forward with integrity.

The most rewarding aspect of leading Solid Rock is witnessing student growth. "It’s rewarding to see them discover confidence in themselves while developing compassion for others," she said. "Some students arrive unsure of their abilities, and over time you watch them become leaders, problem-solvers, and young people who genuinely want to contribute to their communities."

Fasnacht advises parents seeking the right educational environment to look beyond academics. "Ask how a school develops character, encourages curiosity, and helps students build healthy relationships," she recommended. "Education should prepare children for life, not just for the next exam."
