TAMPA — Residents along Florida's Gulf Coast are monitoring Tropical Storm Isaias, which formed Wednesday morning. Forecasters expect the storm to strengthen into a near-Category 3 storm before turning north in the Gulf of Mexico. While the storm could threaten Florida, local meteorologists anticipate minimal impact on the Tampa Bay area.
The storm's name, Isaias, is of Spanish origin and is pronounced "ees-ah-EE-ahs." The National Hurricane Center recycles its storm name lists every six years. In 2020, Tropical Storm Isaias briefly reached hurricane intensity before making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane near Wilmington, North Carolina. The storm's impact did not warrant retiring its name.
The National Hurricane Center retires names only if a storm proves exceptionally deadly or costly. Isaias first appeared on the center's 2014 list. Residents should stay informed through local weather updates and review their hurricane preparedness plans.
