The Weed Commissioner is responsible for the enforcement of the Iowa Noxious Weed Law, Chapter 317 of the Code of Iowa, as amended. The Iowa Noxious Weed Law serves to protect our valuable agricultural production, natural resources, and the health and welfare of all Iowans by requiring the control and elimination of noxious weeds. Noxious weeds can reduce crop yields and forage quality, degrade wildlife habitat, and poison livestock. The law requires all landowners to control noxious weeds on their property. The Weed Commissioner has the responsibility to see that this is accomplished. The Weed Commissioner has the right of entry to private land to inspect for noxious weeds. Owners of land with noxious weeds are to be notified by certified mail if noxious weeds are found on their property and to destroy them within 7 days. If the owner fails to do so, the Weed Commissioner will have them destroyed and the cost will be assessed to the property taxes. The Weed Commissioner Department is overseen by the Tama County Board of Supervisors.
