TALLADEGA, AL – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Talladega and Sylacauga, effective immediately, October 8 at 7:10 PM CDT. This watch indicates that tropical storm conditions are possible within the next 48 hours.

Residents in Talladega and Sylacauga should complete all preparations now before hazardous wind conditions begin. Winds are forecast to reach 10-20 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, with a potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Damage to porches, awnings, and unanchored mobile homes is possible, along with downed tree limbs and scattered power outages. Hazardous driving conditions are expected on bridges and elevated roadways.

A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 1-3 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate rainfall flooding could lead to evacuations and rescues. Rivers and creeks may overflow, causing road closures and hazardous driving conditions. Heed all flood watches and warnings.

The NWS also indicates a potential for a few tornadoes. Residents should include the potential for tornadoes in their emergency plans. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly. The Tropical Storm Watch is set to expire on October 9 at 3:15 AM UTC.
