TALLADEGA, AL – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Talladega and Sylacauga, effective today, October 8, 2026, at 12:59 PM CDT. Residents in these areas should prepare immediately for hazardous wind, moderate flooding rain, and the potential for a few tornadoes. The watch is set to expire at 9:00 PM UTC on October 8, 2026.
Wind speeds are forecast to reach 10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, but there is a potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Property protection efforts should be underway, and all preparations must be completed before winds become hazardous. Limited impacts include damage to unanchored structures, broken tree limbs, and scattered power outages.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 2-4 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Emergency plans should include the potential for moderate flooding, which may prompt evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings immediately. Flooding may impact roads, particularly in low-lying areas.
The NWS also indicates a situation somewhat favorable for tornadoes. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly. Limited tornado impacts include potential damage to roofs, mobile homes, and downed trees. For more information and to prepare, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
