Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Parts of Georgia as Isaias Strengthens
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for parts of Georgia as Hurricane Isaias strengthens, bringing threats of strong winds, heavy rainfall with flooding, and potential tornadoes from Friday night through Sunday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Peachtree City has issued a Tropical Cyclone Local Statement, indicating a Moderate severity and Expected urgency, for a wide area across North and Central Georgia. As of 3:03 PM EDT on October 8, Hurricane Isaias is strengthening over the Gulf of Mexico, prompting a Tropical Storm Watch for specific counties.
Residents in Chattahoochee, Harris, Heard, Macon, Marion, Meriwether, Muscogee, Pike, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, Troup, Upson, and Webster counties are now under a Tropical Storm Watch. These areas should prepare for potential wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph from early Saturday through early Sunday. A High Wind Watch has been issued for most of North Georgia, with similar wind impacts expected.
Widespread rainfall of 1 to 3 inches, with isolated amounts up to 5 inches, is anticipated from Friday night through Sunday. This could lead to localized flash flooding, especially in urban and low-lying areas. A Flood Watch is in effect for the entire area. Additionally, the NWS warns of the potential for several tornadoes to develop across North and Central Georgia, particularly within the outer rainbands, from Saturday into Sunday morning. These tornadoes can form quickly and may occur overnight.
The NWS advises residents to check emergency plans and supply kits, secure outdoor items, and monitor local news and weather.gov for updates. Follow guidance from local officials, including any evacuation orders. The next update from NWS Peachtree City is expected around 5 PM EDT.
