Savannah Port Shatters Records with 5.7M TEUs in 2025 Boom
SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The Georgia Ports Authority capped 2025 as its second-busiest year on record, handling 5.7 million twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs), a 2.6% increase or 146,000 TEUs over 2024, according to a Jan. 27, 2026, GPA release. Fiscal year 2025 (July 2024-June 2025) saw even stronger gains at 8.6% or 450,000 TEUs, with monthly peaks topping 500,000 TEUs in March, April and May, including a record 515,500 TEUs in April alone -- up 17% year-over-year. President and CEO Griff Lynch credited the momentum to recovering global supply chains and Georgia's export prowess.
The boom rippled across inland facilities, with the Appalachian Regional Port in Chatsworth achieving a record 45,700 containers, up 19%, while Mason Mega Rail in Savannah hit over 50,000 lifts in April, up 8%. Looking ahead, GPA breaks ground on the Blue Ridge Connector inland terminal in Gainesville mid-2026 to tap northeastern Georgia's manufacturing hub. A new U.S. Customs inspection warehouse opened July 2025 at Garden City Terminal, streamlining trade. Through October 2025, Savannah moved 4.8 million TEUs, up 4% calendar year-to-date.
This growth powers Georgia's economy, sustaining thousands of jobs in Savannah, Brunswick and beyond while driving exports from the state's farms, factories and forests. GPA's $4.5 billion self-funded plan adds five new container berths in Savannah -- unmatched among U.S. ports -- plus a RoRo berth in Brunswick, doubling capacity over the next decade after $3.2 billion in prior investments. Savannah now offers 39 weekly container services, leading South Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports, with 1,669 ships calling in 2025 averaging 1,878 TEUs each.
