Social Host Ordinance
SWIFT COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE
SWIFT COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE "SOCIAL HOST" ORDINANCE Swift County Sheriff's Office has enacted a "Social Host" ordinance, which went into effect on October 15, 2017. This ordinance is designed to address the problem of underage drinking in Swift County. "Underage drinking is a serious problem with dangerous consequences," said Sheriff John Olson. "This ordinance is a necessary step to hold responsible adults accountable and to help prevent underage drinking and its associated harms." Under the ordinance, adults who own, rent, or otherwise control a property are prohibited from allowing or permitting underage drinking on that property. This includes allowing minors to consume alcohol, even if the adult does not directly supply the alcohol. Violations of the ordinance can result in penalties of up to 90 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000. In addition, adults found to be in violation may be subject to civil liability for any damages or injuries that result from underage drinking on their property. The ordinance applies to all properties within Swift County, including private residences, rental properties, and public spaces. The Swift County Sheriff's Office will be actively enforcing the ordinance and will work to educate the public about its provisions. "We want to make it clear that we will not tolerate underage drinking in Swift County," Sheriff Olson stated. "This ordinance will help us to create a safer community for our children and to prevent the tragic consequences that can result from underage drinking." The Social Host ordinance is an important tool to combat underage drinking and its associated dangers. The Swift County Sheriff's Office is committed to working with the community to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents.
