Red Flag Warning: Fire Risk High in Surprise Valley, Lassen, Washoe

A Red Flag Warning is active until 9:00 PM PDT tonight for Surprise Valley California, Eastern Lassen County, and Northern Washoe County due to high winds and low humidity, increasing fire risk; avoid spark-causing activities.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for Surprise Valley California, Eastern Lassen County, and Northern Washoe County until 9:00 PM PDT this evening, October 9.

Residents are advised to avoid outdoor activities that could cause a spark near dry vegetation. This includes yard work, target shooting, and campfires. Follow all local fire restrictions.

The National Weather Service in Reno, NV, issued the warning due to a combination of gusty west winds, reaching 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, and low relative humidity, between 12 and 17 percent. These conditions, coupled with prolonged dry conditions, create an environment where fires can rapidly grow in size and intensity, making them difficult for first responders to contain.
