Cities Helping Cities May 20, 2025 As our friends at Kentucky League of Cities say, we are about “cities helping cities.” The City of Richmond stands with our neighbors who were affected by the recent storms. RKY has provided assistance to these areas and is ready to further support recovery efforts. Many city personnel responded immediately to the emergency to offer a helping hand. We recognize the actions of Richmond Police officers, Richmond Firefighters, and Madison County EMS personnel who took action to help others, as is their nature to do so. They do not respond for attention, but we are grateful they are part of Team RKY. Recycling Department Director Aaron Vaughn has a personal connection to one of the areas impacted by the recent tornadoes-- his parents live in London, Kentucky. Vaughn requested to collect disaster relief items at the Richmond Recycling Center for three days, load the items on a truck and personally drive the items to London for distribution to those in need. His request was granted immediately. People wishing to make donations at the Richmond Recycling Center at 550 Recycle Drive are asked to bring the following: baby food in jars, diapers, baby wipes, paper products, toiletries, blankets, and non-perishable items. There is no need for bottled water or clothing items. The Team Kentucky Storm Relief Fund can be found here: https://secure.kentucky.gov/formservices/Finance/stormrelief/ The Richmond Register published several local donation locations: https://www.richmondregister.com/news/madison-county-lending-helping-hand-to-tornado-victims-heres-where-you-can-donate/article_951d2b90-8220-4597-8872-d92e1e12e465.html Thank you for your generosity.

"The City of Richmond is proud to be the host city for the Kentucky Special Olympics Summer Games with EKU serving as the host site. But 2025 is an extra extraordinary year.2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the Kentucky Special Olympics Summer Games being held in Richmond on the “Campus Beautiful,” Eastern Kentucky University. The City of Richmond and EKU will celebrate this milestone by having a “mini” parade featuring the Special Olympics athletes during their annual torch run on Friday, June 6, 2025, at 4 PM.The city is inviting our many friends and community partners to help us with this event. We are hoping to line Lancaster Avenue from West Main Street to the EKU pedway with as many supporters as we can to encourage and the participants and volunteers. We ask that you make a sign, wave a flag, carry balloons and just come out and cheer on our guests.Supporters are asked to stand along Lancaster Ave. beginning at 3:30/3:45 PM on Friday, June 6th. Parking will be available in EKU’s Adams lot, EKU’s Lancaster lot or at Richmond City Park. The torch run begins at the Richmond Police Dept. at 4 PM the police escort of the procession (rolling roadblock) should reach Lancaster Ave. by approximately 4:15.The entire event shouldn’t take much more than an hour of your time. It is the city’s sincere hope that you will come out and be a part of this uniquely Richmond event. If you would like to participate (registration is NOT required) or for more information, please contact: Phillip Seyfrit at the Battle of Richmond Visitors Center at 859-624-0013 during normal business hours.Hope to see many of you on June 6th!!!"
