Sumter County Council Addresses $3.7M Budget Shortfall
Sumter County Council approved waste tire regulations and heard projections of a $3.7 million revenue shortfall at its April 28 meeting.
Council gave second reading to an ordinance establishing waste tire acceptance and tipping fees under state Act No. 33 of 2025. The ordinance designates a single county site to accept waste tires, County Attorney Johnathan Bryan said.
County Administrator Gary Mixon presented preliminary budget figures showing a $3.7 million deficit in general revenue and a $6.4 million shortfall in the Capital Fund. "It would be a tough budget," Mixon said, adding he expected to produce a balanced plan. Chairman James T. McCain Jr. said Council would "work through it."
Council also approved first reading of two ordinances: one establishing a magistrate court agreement with the Town of Mayesville, and another approving a utility easement on University Drive.
McCain presented a proclamation declaring April 26 through May 3 as Soil and Water Conservation District Week, which Council approved.
