Boaters on area lakes across central South Carolina are advised to use extra caution due to a Lake Wind Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Columbia SC. The advisory is effective immediately, October 10, 2026, at 1:34 PM EDT, and remains in effect until 11:00 PM EDT tonight, October 10, 2026.
East winds are expected to reach 10 to 20 mph, with gusts potentially up to 35 mph. These conditions will create strong winds and rough waves, posing hazardous conditions for small craft on lakes within the affected area. The advisory covers Chesterfield, Newberry, Fairfield, Kershaw, Saluda, Lexington, Richland, Lee, Aiken, Sumter, Barnwell, Calhoun, Clarendon, Bamberg, Northern Lancaster, Southern Lancaster, Northwestern Orangeburg, Central Orangeburg, and Southeastern Orangeburg counties.
The NWS urges all boaters to be aware that strong winds and rough waves can overturn small craft. Taking precautions and exercising increased vigilance on the water during this period is critical for safety.
