City Offices Closed Memorial Day; Visit 'Fallen Comrade' Memorial

In observance of Memorial Day, City of Clinton offices will be closed Monday, May 25. Offices will reopen Tuesday, May 26, during regular business hours. As we pause to remember those who gave their lives in service to our country, we invite residents to visit the “Fallen Comrade” memorial located at the Clinton Visitor Center. The powerful bronze sculpture tells the story of three childhood friends from Clinton, Waller King, Joe Albritton, and Homer Ainsworth, who served together in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. The memorial depicts Marine Joe Albritton carrying his fallen friend, Homer Ainsworth, from the battlefield so he could be brought home to Clinton and laid to rest on American soil. Created by renowned Mississippi College art professor Dr. Sam Gore and dedicated on Veterans Day in 2012, the sculpture stands as a lasting reminder of friendship, sacrifice, and the cost of freedom. Today, Albritton and Ainsworth are buried just feet apart in Clinton Cemetery, their story forever woven into the history of our community. This Memorial Day, we honor all who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. The post City of Clinton Offices Closed on Memorial Day appeared first on City of Clinton.

City Urges Residents: Don't Flush 'Flushable' Wipes

The City of Clinton is reminding residents that so called “flushable” wipes should never be flushed down toilets, as they are creating serious and costly problems within the city’s sewer system. Recently, Public Works crews removed a large mass of wipes, grease, and debris from the sewer system after it caused a major obstruction. While many wipes are marketed as “flushable,” they do not break down like toilet paper and can quickly accumulate inside sewer pipes and pump stations. The problem becomes even worse when fats, oils, and grease are poured down household drains. Grease hardens inside pipes and combines with wipes and other debris, forming large blockages that restrict sewer flow and damage equipment. These obstructions can lead to: Sewer backups into homes and businesses Damage to pumps and sewer infrastructure Emergency repairs and maintenance costs Increased strain on the city’s sewer system Repairing this damage is expensive and can ultimately contribute to higher sewer costs over time. The City of Clinton asks residents to help protect the sewer system by following a few simple guidelines: Do not flush wipes, even if labeled “flushable” Do not pour grease, fats, or cooking oils down sinks or drains Only flush toilet paper Residents are encouraged to dispose of wipes in the trash and allow grease to cool before placing it in a sealed container for disposal. Preventing these blockages helps protect city infrastructure, reduce costly repairs, and save money for both taxpayers and homeowners. City of Clinton Announces Spring Citywide Cleanup

" The City of Clinton will host its annual Spring Citywide Cleanup from April 25 through May 2, 2026, providing residents with a free and convenient opportunity to dispose of yard waste, bulky items, and other household debris. The site will be closed on Sunday, April 26. Dumpsters will be available at the former Northside Elementary School, located at 1111 Old Vicksburg Road, and will operate daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. City employees will be on site throughout the week to assist residents as needed. To help ensure a smooth and safe process, residents are asked to line up on Longwood Place in the Briars and turn west onto Old Vicksburg Road when entering the disposal site. Due to the cost of the program, this service is limited to City of Clinton residents only. Proof of residency will be required and may be verified with a City of Clinton water or garbage bill, or a driver’s license or state-issued identification card with a Clinton address. The cleanup is intended to help residents clear out unwanted materials at no cost, but certain items will not be accepted. These include electronic waste such as computers, printers, and keyboards, as well as refrigerators, freezers, or air conditioning units that contain freon. For additional information, residents may contact the Public Works Department at 601-924-2239. The post Spring Citywide Cleanup Scheduled for April 25 – May 2 appeared first on City of Clinton."
