Trump, Senate Republicans at odds over intelligence nominee and surveillance bill

President Trump has prevented Senate Republicans from moving forward with a rapid confirmation of his intelligence nominee while also delaying a bill to renew a surveillance law, according to reporting on the relationship between the president and his party's Senate caucus.

The two moves mark divergence in the approach Trump and Senate Republicans had coordinated heading into the midterm elections. Republicans in the Senate had sought expedited approval of Trump's intelligence pick. Trump reversed course on that timeline.

The surveillance law renewal has stalled as well. Senate Republicans had intended to pass the legislation without delay, but Trump's intervention halted that effort.

The disputes highlight differences between Trump and Senate Republican leadership on both the pace and strategy of major legislative and confirmation items. Senate Republicans have prioritized certain confirmations and bills as part of their midterm messaging, while Trump has taken independent positions on the timing and viability of those same items.

No statements from Trump or Senate Republican leadership have been published addressing the specific policy disagreements or the reasons behind the changed timeline. Both sides have seats to fill and bills to pass before the November elections, making coordination on legislative priorities consequential for both.
