Mayor–council government is a system of local government in which a mayor serves as the chief executive officer (CEO) and a council serves as the legislative body, each being directly elected. The system is commonly used in the United States and other countries. In this form of municipal government, the mayor is either a "strong mayor" with almost complete executive authority or a "weak mayor" who presides over the council but has little or no outside authority. The council may be elected at-large or from districts or wards.
