Trump Campaign Reinitiates Effort to Remove Federal Reserve Governor Cook

Why it matters locally: Changes in leadership or policy at the Federal Reserve can influence interest rates and monetary policy, which in turn can affect economic conditions for Virginia's key industries and overall business climate.

Donald Trump's presidential campaign has resumed its effort to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. This action follows a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision concerning the President's authority to dismiss agency heads. Sources familiar with the campaign's plans indicate a continued focus on removing Cook from her position on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Cook began her 14-year term in May 2022, which is scheduled to conclude in 2026. The Supreme Court recently ruled that the President has the power to remove the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. This decision has been cited by those advocating for Cook's removal as a basis for presidential authority over Federal Reserve governors. Federal Reserve governors typically serve fixed 14-year terms and historically have not been subject to presidential removal without cause. The current administration has indicated its intention to defend Governor Cook's tenure.
