U.S. and Iran clash over nuclear inspections after Switzerland talks
The United States and Iran disagreed Monday over whether the UN nuclear watchdog will gain access to Iranian nuclear facilities, according to statements from both sides.
American officials said the International Atomic Energy Agency would conduct inspections. Iranian officials countered that no such agreement exists.
The disagreement surfaced after a weekend round of talks in Switzerland between American and Iranian delegations. The meetings marked the first negotiation session since both nations struck a new ceasefire deal.
Beyond the inspection dispute, the two countries divided on other matters discussed during the Switzerland sessions. Details of those additional disagreements remained unclear, though sources indicated fees related to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz numbered among the contentious issues.
The talks represented a renewed diplomatic engagement after the ceasefire took effect. Negotiations on nuclear matters have long anchored U.S.-Iran relations, with international scrutiny focusing on Iran's uranium enrichment activities and the scope of outside monitoring.
