WASHINGTON – The House of Representatives passed a non-binding resolution that seeks to direct President Donald Trump to remove United States armed forces from hostilities against Iran. The measure, approved on Thursday, invoked the 1973 War Powers Act. The resolution passed with a 224-187 vote. Eight Republicans joined Democrats in supporting the measure, while three Democrats voted against it. The War Powers Act generally requires the president to obtain congressional authorization for military engagements lasting beyond 60 days, though presidents have historically challenged its limitations on executive power. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi stated, "Last week, President Trump conducted a provocative and disproportionate military airstrike against Iran." She added, "This action endangered our service members, diplomats, and others by risking a serious escalation of tensions with Iran." In remarks before the vote, President Trump called the resolution "ridiculous" and argued that Democrats were attempting to undermine his foreign policy actions. "They only did this for political reasons," Trump said at the White House.
