Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Oktibbeha County: Prepare for Winds & Flooding
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Oktibbeha County, with residents urged to prepare immediately for hazardous winds up to 45 mph and moderate flooding, according to the NWS.
Residents of Oktibbeha County are advised to finalize preparations immediately as a Tropical Storm Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS. This warning is effective as of October 9 at 3:56 PM CDT and expires October 10 at 12:00 AM UTC.
Forecasters anticipate peak winds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, with potential for winds reaching 39 to 57 mph. Damage to porches, awnings, carports, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Expect many large tree limbs to break and some trees to snap or uproot, leading to a few impassable roads due to debris. Scattered power and communications outages are also a possibility.
A Flood Watch is also in effect for Oktibbeha County, with 1-3 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate rainfall flooding may prompt evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries could become swollen and overflow, especially in vulnerable areas. Floodwaters may enter some structures and weaken foundations. Hazardous driving conditions are anticipated, with some road and bridge closures.
The NWS advises acting now to complete preparations before hazardous winds begin. Consider protective actions if you are in a flood-prone area and heed all flood watches and warnings. Failure to take action could result in serious injury or loss of life. No tornadoes are expected at this time, but showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur.
