The Lee County Health Department is reminding residents to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile Virus. Residents are urged to use insect repellent containing DEET, wear long sleeves and pants, especially during dawn and dusk, and eliminate standing water around their homes.
After 24 years of service to the City of Opelika, City Attorney, Guy Smith T, has announced his retirement effective August 30, 2024. A reception honoring Smith will be held on August 29, 2024, at the Opelika Municipal Courtroom from 2-4 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
"Lee County EMA to Host Skywarn Training The Lee County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) will host a Skywarn Training on Thursday, May 9, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The training will take place at the EMA Office located at 1800 Frederick Road in Opelika. Skywarn is a volunteer program with the National Weather Service. Skywarn volunteers are trained to identify and report severe weather events, such as tornadoes, hail, and flash floods. This information is used by the National Weather Service to issue timely and accurate warnings, which can help to save lives. The Skywarn training session will cover the following topics: What is severe weather? How to identify severe weather How to report severe weather Severe weather safety tips The training session is free and open to the public. However, registration is required. To register, please visit the Lee County EMA website or call 334-749-0240. “We are excited to offer this training to the public,” said Rita Smith, Director of the Lee County EMA. “Skywarn volunteers play a vital role in helping us to protect our community from severe weather. We encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about severe weather to attend this training.”"
