Dangerous Rip Currents & High Surf Expected Through Saturday
A Rip Current Statement and High Surf Advisory are in effect for coastal areas of Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, and Brevard counties through Saturday, with dangerous swimming conditions and large waves expected.
Residents and visitors in Coastal Indian River, Coastal St. Lucie, Coastal Martin, Mainland Northern Brevard, Northern Brevard Barrier Islands, Mainland Southern Brevard, and Southern Brevard Barrier Islands counties are advised to stay out of the water due to a Rip Current Statement and High Surf Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Melbourne FL.
The Rip Current Statement, indicating a High Rip Current Risk, is in effect from 2:39 AM EDT on September 25 until late Saturday night, September 27. The High Surf Advisory, warning of large breaking waves of 5 to 8 feet, is active until 4:00 AM EDT on Saturday, September 27.
Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, along with localized beach erosion, are expected. Rip currents are powerful channels of water that can sweep swimmers away from shore. The NWS strongly discourages entering the surf. If caught in a rip current, individuals should relax and float, avoiding swimming against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Heed advice from lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs.
