Keep Saint Augustine Kids Safe in Summer Heat

How to Keep Saint Augustine Children Safe During Summer Heat

Saint Augustine parents should take precautions to protect children from summer heat-related illness and injury.

Keep children hydrated by offering water throughout the day and avoiding sugary drinks, which increase dehydration risk. Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every two hours and have children wear hats and sunglasses outdoors.

Dress children in loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. Limit strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, typically 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. When children must be active outside, require frequent breaks in the shade.

Never leave a child alone in a parked car. Interior temperatures can reach dangerous levels within minutes, even on mild days.

Learn the signs of heatstroke: high body temperature, confusion and seizures. Call 911 immediately if a child shows these symptoms.
