Tropical Storm Rachel Impacts Expected Tonight in San Diego County
San Diego County is under a Tropical Storm Watch for Post-Tropical Cyclone Rachel, with heavy rain, strong winds, and coastal flooding expected from late tonight, October 10, through early Sunday afternoon.
San Diego County residents should prepare for significant impacts from Post-Tropical Cyclone Rachel starting late tonight, October 10, and continuing through early Sunday afternoon. The National Weather Service (NWS) in San Diego has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for all San Diego County Coastal Areas, Deserts, Mountains, and Valleys.
The NWS reports that Post-Tropical Cyclone Rachel is approximately 190 miles south of San Diego, moving north-northeast at 36 mph, and is expected to make landfall south of the U.S./Mexico border tonight. While Rachel no longer has tropical characteristics, tropical storm-level conditions are anticipated.
Expect heavy rain leading to localized and flash flooding, with peak rainfall rates of 0.50 to 1 inch per hour possible, especially in mountainous regions. Total rainfall could reach 0.50 to 2.5 inches. The San Diego River at Fashion Valley is forecast to crest at 8.1 feet (action/monitor stage) just before noon on Sunday; those near the river should monitor forecasts closely.
Strong winds are also expected, particularly in southern and eastern San Diego County, with sustained winds of 39+ mph and gusts up to 60 mph possible on mountain ridges. Coastal areas face high tides over 7 feet, high surf of 6 to 9 feet, and gusty winds, creating a high threat of significant coastal flooding and beach erosion, as well as dangerous swimming conditions.
Residents in flood-vulnerable areas, such as low-lying regions or near the ocean and rivers, should plan to move to safe shelter on higher ground. Follow advice from local officials regarding evacuations. Monitor weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio, and local news for updates. The next NWS update is expected around 2 AM PDT, or sooner if conditions change.
