Trump Cites Iran for Reduced US-South Korea Drills

Former President Donald Trump stated the United States will decrease its joint military exercises with South Korea. He indicated this reduction stemmed from South Korea's decision not to participate in a conflict with Iran.

"We're going to be reducing the number of military drills with South Korea," Trump said. He added that South Korea "didn't help us with Iran." He made these comments while addressing supporters in a campaign rally.

Trump previously ordered reductions in these joint drills during his presidency, describing them as costly. At that time, he also expressed a desire for South Korea to bear a larger share of the financial burden for the approximately 28,500 U.S. troops stationed in the country.

The United States and South Korea conduct these annual exercises, which include both computer simulations and field training, to maintain readiness against potential threats. Critics of reducing the drills have previously warned that such actions could weaken defensive capabilities or send an undesirable signal to North Korea.
