Michigan Great Lakes Resorts Book Record Summer Amid Eco-Push
LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Economic Development Corporation's tourism arm reported a 15% increase in reservations for Great Lakes resorts ahead of the summer season, marking a record for the state. Initially highlighted by FOX 2 Detroit, the boom is attributed to new eco-tourism initiatives promoted under the Pure Michigan campaign. Launched April 14, 2026, the "For Every Season of You" effort spotlights "In Our Nature" and "In Motion" themes, drawing travelers to beach getaways, outdoor adventures and urban escapes through July 31 across TV, social media and 49 billboards in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Traverse City and beyond.
Grand Rapids exemplified the trend with Experience Grand Rapids securing 533 group contracts in 2025, yielding a record 173,738 room nights through the West Michigan Sports Commission. Statewide, Pure Michigan celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2026, underscoring two decades of growth in the Great Lakes State's $24 billion tourism sector. Eco-focused offerings, including guided hikes along Lake Michigan dunes and sustainable paddling tours on the inland lakes, have captivated out-of-state visitors from Ohio, Indiana and beyond.
Yet the influx poses challenges, particularly in visitor hotspots like Mackinac Island, where businesses brace for peak season without enough seasonal staff. Industry leaders in Marquette and other Upper Peninsula destinations warn of staffing shortages amid robust demand, urging quicker hiring for hotels, resorts and guides. As Michigan's 3,200 miles of freshwater coastline beckon, the record bookings signal economic wins for local communities but test the industry's workforce readiness.
