Atlantic City Cops Bust 15 in Casino Drug Ring Raid
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Law enforcement agencies launched a sweeping raid early Friday, arresting 15 suspects tied to a drug ring that supplied casinos and boardwalk areas along the Jersey Shore, according to initial reports from the Press of Atlantic City. The Atlantic City Task Force, bolstered by New Jersey State Police units including the Casino Gaming Bureau’s Special Investigation Unit, targeted a network distributing approximately 30,000 heroin doses monthly in Atlantic and Ocean counties. Seizures included 16,000 bags of heroin, over $52,000 in cash, and evidence of fentanyl-laced product that exacerbated the region's opiate epidemic.
The bust echoes prior crackdowns, such as the 2015 Atlantic City Task Force operation that netted 19 arrests, including heroin suppliers Jose Michilena and Robert Delacruz, each sentenced to 10 years in Atlantic County Superior Court after guilty pleas. Michilena and Delacruz were nabbed on April 18, 2015, at 33rd Street and 13th Avenue in Paterson during a deal with Pleasantville's Helene Gonzalez and Galloway's Tarik Hopkins. Investigators revealed ring members sold to juveniles, transacted near children and bartered public assistance for drugs, prompting involvement from state police TEAMS units and K-9 teams.
Casinos have long been laundering hubs for illicit gains, as seen in cases like local man Ragland's alleged $107,000 in suspicious casino and wire transfers tied to drug profits. Earlier busts, including a Boardwalk Empire-style sting, seized 11 pounds of marijuana, heroin, cocaine and a handgun from 10 suspects just blocks from the iconic boardwalk. A violent gang war-fueled probe confiscated $2.6 million in cash, vehicles and real estate from an Atlantic City network.
Atlantic City officials hailed the raid as a win for public safety amid the city's tourism revival. With 15 in custody, the operation disrupts a pipeline preying on shore visitors and residents, though authorities caution more arrests loom in the ongoing probe.
