Trump Administration Implemented New Asylum Application Rule

Why it matters locally: The new asylum application rule could impact the processing of asylum claims for individuals arriving in Pennsylvania, potentially affecting the workload and resources of social services and legal aid organizations assisting asylum seekers in the state.

The Trump administration has implemented a new regulation concerning asylum applications. This measure joins a series of other adjustments the administration made to the program for individuals seeking protection from persecution in their home countries. Changes to the asylum program under the Trump administration have involved various procedural and policy shifts. These modifications have altered how individuals apply for asylum and how authorities process these claims. The asylum program historically offers refuge to those fleeing persecution based on factors such as race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. The new rule represents an additional step in the administration's actions regarding this program.
