Susan Blizzard, Greene County Commissioner, Dies at 68
Susan Moore Blizzard, a two-term Greene County commissioner and science teacher who organized the county's first Relay for Life, died Thursday, June 4. She was 68.
Born in Germany on November 2, 1957, while her father served in the military, Blizzard earned a degree in education with a science concentration from Atlantic Christian College. She taught science at Greene Central High School and continued working through her breast cancer treatment and recovery.
After surviving cancer, Blizzard organized Greene County's inaugural Relay for Life, which earned recognition as "Tops in the Nation" for money raised per capita.
Blizzard volunteered as an EMT with Hookerton Fire and Rescue. Following Hurricane Floyd's 1999 flooding, she joined the board of Greene County Interfaith and later served as president, overseeing the organization's expansion and acquisition of a new facility.
In 2012, when Greene County faced severe financial problems, Blizzard attended commissioner meetings to advocate for county employees facing benefit cuts and furlough days. Her advocacy led to her election to the Greene County Board of Commissioners. She won both terms unopposed and received the most votes of any candidate on the ballot. During her eight years of service, she lobbied for construction of the Greene County Wellness Center, pushed for county transparency, and refused the monthly stipend paid to commissioners.
Blizzard suffered a stroke in early 2026 followed by health complications.
She is survived by her husband Steve, whom she married nearly 50 years ago; son Jay Blizzard and wife Ashley; daughter Sarah Blizzard and husband Joseph Wade; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild, with another grandson expected soon.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at Snow Hill Cemetery. Larry Head, a longtime friend and fellow EMT, will officiate. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 5, at the home of Jay Blizzard.
Memorials may be directed to The Service League of Greenville Hospice House, 920 Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.
