Smithfield residents traveling on East Main Street, also known as NC 42, should be aware of a complete road closure that began Friday evening and will continue through Monday morning. The closure is in effect between Lombard Street and Shotwell Street to allow CSX Transportation to perform significant repairs on the railroad crossing.
The work started at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 7, 2024, and is scheduled to conclude at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, June 10, 2024. This essential maintenance aims to improve the safety and reliability of the crossing.
During the closure, a signed detour route will guide drivers. Motorists will be directed to use Lombard Street, U.S. 70 Business (Fordham Boulevard), and Shotwell Street to bypass the work zone. Officials advise drivers to anticipate delays and, if possible, seek alternative routes to minimize disruption.
Local businesses located within the closure area will remain accessible. However, patrons and delivery drivers will need to approach these establishments from outside the restricted limits.
Both the Town of Clayton and CSX Transportation have expressed their appreciation for the public's patience and understanding as they undertake these necessary infrastructure improvements.
