Good News You Can Borrow, Read, Rescue, and Compost
Libraries lend more than books, Dolly Parton puts stories in children’s hands, condors keep returning to the sky, and mushroom roots are replacing plastic foam. The world still has plenty of nonsense, but these four developments know how to do useful work.
Alligators, Bears, and the Legal Value of a Jet
This week, wildlife entered a patrol car, an alligator entered a restaurant, and a man entered court seeking an airplane that never existed. The paperwork remains undefeated.

Burney Falls: California’s Waterfall You Don’t Have to Hike For
Take the back road to Burney, California, where a waterfall pours out of a forest wall like somebody left the faucet on. It’s an easy weekend escape with one excellent roadside rule: arrive before your appetite turns into a hostage situation.

The Sit-to-Stand Squat: Your Most Useful Leg Exercise
You don’t need a barbell, a gym membership, or the flexibility of a circus contortionist. This week, practice the squat you use every time you get out of a chair—and make it stronger on purpose.

Cut a Clean Half-Lap Joint With Hand Tools
A half-lap joint looks like serious woodworking, but it is really two pieces of wood politely sharing the same space. Make four of them this weekend and you can build a sturdy little wall shelf with no power saw required.

The Cabbage Wedges That Turn Into Candy at the Edges
Give a humble head of cabbage a hot oven, enough oil, and a little patience, and it becomes crisp, sweet, and deeply savory. This is the side dish that makes people ask what you did differently.

MaineDOT to Begin Demolition of Impacted Llewellyn Estes Bridge Spans
MaineDOT to Begin Demolition of Impacted Llewellyn Estes Bridge Spans OLD TOWN – October 8, 2026 — Starting October 13, the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) will begin demolition of the impacted spans of the new Llewellyn Estes Bridge over the Stillwater River. To safely complete this work, MaineDOT will periodically close the temporary bridge over the Stillwater River between 9AM and 3PM beginning Tuesday, October 13. These intermittent closures could continue into the week of October 19. Closure timing will depend on demolition operations, construction progress, weather conditions, and other site-specific factors. The work will include crews carefully separating the span from the pier and abutment, reducing it into smaller pieces, and lifting those pieces from the river for processing on land. This work will proceed slowly and carefully to protect workers and the public while minimizing damage to the pier and abutment.Temporary bridge closures are necessary because of the impacted span’s proximity to the temporary bridge and the large equipment needed to remove it. As removal work progresses downstream and farther from the temporary bridge, the need for closures will decrease. MaineDOT will use message boards to provide motorists with advance notice before temporary bridge closures occur.During closures, motorists traveling on Stillwater Avenue should follow the signed detour using Bennoch Road, North Main Street, and College Avenue to return to Stillwater Avenue. Motorists should allow extra travel time, expect delays, and use caution while traveling through the detour area and near the work zone.MaineDOT appreciates the patience and understanding of the traveling public while this work is completed. Project updates, frequently asked questions, the complete memo from the assessment team, and previously released information are available on MaineDOT’s Old Town Stillwater Avenue Bridge Replacement webpage.
