Mount Edgecumbe Senior Earns Alaska's Seal of Biliteracy

Staff Writer
June 12, 2026

Nicole Williams, a senior at Mount Edgecumbe High School in Sitka, earned Alaska's Seal of Biliteracy by demonstrating proficiency in English and at least one additional language.

The state awards the seal to high school graduates who meet specific proficiency standards in two or more languages. The recognition appears on Williams' diploma and transcript, signaling her language abilities to colleges and employers.

Mount Edgecumbe, a state-operated boarding school, serves Alaska Native students from across the state and offers language programs that allow students to maintain heritage languages while completing academic coursework.

Alaska adopted the Seal of Biliteracy program to recognize students who develop skills in multiple languages, including Alaska Native languages and world languages taught in schools.
