Fire Weather Watch Issued for Pine Ridge/Nebraska National Forest Area Saturday
A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Pine Ridge/Nebraska National Forest and surrounding areas for Saturday afternoon due to strong winds and low humidity, making critical fire conditions possible.
A Fire Weather Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Cheyenne, WY, effective Saturday afternoon, October 10th. This watch impacts the Pine Ridge/Nebraska National Forest area, including Fire Weather Zone 434, as well as Box Butte/South Sioux/Niobrara River, Lower North Platte River Basin/Scottsbluff National Monument, Lodgepole Creek/Southern Nebraska Panhandle, and Goshen/Middle-Lower North Platte River Basin.
The NWS warns that critical fire weather conditions are possible due to anticipated southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph, combined with relative humidity between 15 and 25 percent. These conditions could lead to the rapid spread of any fires that develop, potentially becoming life-threatening. Outdoor burning is not recommended during this time.
The previously issued Red Flag Warning for Pine Ridge/Nebraska National Forest expired at 7:00 PM MDT on Friday, October 9th. Residents in the affected areas should take precautions and avoid any activities that could spark a wildfire.
